Located in Southwest Connecticut along the Fivemile River, the community has a population of 19,738 (as of the 2010 census) and spans just 22.1 square miles.

  •  Founded in 1731 as Canaan Parish, the town incorporated in 1801. It was a predominantly agricultural community before the local shoe-making industry prospered during and after the Revolutionary War.
  • It became a popular summer destination for the East Coast elite, who built vacation homes in the area in the late 1800s.
  • It emerged as an architectural destination in the 1940s, when the Harvard 5, a group of Harvard of School Design alumni who acquired swaths of land and started experimenting with the Bauhaus aesthetic.
  • Today, it’s an established, well-heeled neighborhood that has retained its pastoral character.
